Planning Ahead FAQs

Question Topics:

Pre-planning

What is Pre-planning or Pre-arrangement?

When you plan in advance, you are making choices now based on your wishes as to how your final arrangements will be carried out. Thus, you can reduce family concerns at the time of your death.

What Do I Need to Do to Preplan?

At your convenience, you can meet with a member of our staff to discuss your options and your preferences. By making some or all of these decisions now, you give your family peace of mind, and also benefit financially. You can also initiate the process by starting your arrangements online.

What Are the Advantages of Advanced Planning?

There are many advantages when you take care of your final arrangements in advance. The most obvious benefit is financial, but there are a number of emotional benefits, too. When you make arrangements in advance you have a better opportunity to make informed choices. If you decide to prepay, you guarantee today's prices, and can take advantage of affordable payment plans.

What is the Difference Between Prepaying and Preplanning?

When you preplan, you do not need to pay for everything in advance - your estate can pay for the services at the rates being charged when your funeral is held. We simply keep your plans on file at the funeral home until they are needed. However, if you prepay at the time you make your pre-arrangements, you can lock in today's prices. We offer several affordable payment options. We'll be happy to discuss these options with you and help you make a decision that best suits your needs.

I Preplanned My Funeral at Another Funeral Home; Can I Transfer My arrangements to Vay - Schleich & Meeson Funeral Home?

Yes, we honor all preplanned and prefunded arrangements made at any other funeral home. If you would like more information, please contact us anytime.

Pre-funding

What if I Don't Have Enough to Pay For the Total Funeral?

We have several choices for payment. Many people choose to pre-pay in full; however, you can fund what you can, anytime. There is typically no formal schedule of payments which can offer you flexibility.

What if I Change My Mind On the Type of Services or Merchandise After I Prepay?

You can change the funeral home services and merchandise at any time. We know that several factors determine the types of services and merchandise you choose. Our plans can always be changed and are flexible to meet your needs.

What Happens to the Money I Prepay to the Funeral Home?

The funeral home must deposit 100% of the funds within 10 days in an interest-bearing account or a government-backed investment. Your monies are fully FDIC insured.

How Will I Know That the Money Has Been Deposited?

The funeral home will notify you where your money has been deposited within 30 days of the deposit. Also, the location and amount of interest earned will appear on the IRS form 1099-INT (or equivalent) sent to you in January of each year. The funeral home can also, at any time advise you of the total value of your account, including principal and interest.

Can I Get My Money Back if I Change My Mind?

If you established a revocable trust, you can withdraw the principal and the accrued interest at any time. However, if you established an irrevocable trust you cannot withdraw any principal or interest; it must be refunded to the county.

General Questions

What Happens if the Death Occurs Out-of-Town?
